UPDATE: Regrettably, we must inform you that our free “Evening with Sonia Sanchez” event has been canceled due to an unforeseen medical issue. Sanchez says she is unavailable to attend any of her planned events for April, including our festival.
Of course, we are sad she cannot attend our festival this year, not only because she is one of Birmingham’s most renowned daughters, but because she also means so much to our MCPF staff and the Birmingham poetry community at large. We were looking forward to seeing her speak and interact with her audience. However, we wish her a speedy recovery, and we can’t wait until she can inspire poetry lovers on the rest of her tour dates this season.
We hope you understand and send well wishes Sanchez’s way as well. We also hope you stick with us throughout the rest of the month and take part in the other events we have planned, such as “Sister City Listens to Community: Poetry on the Freedom House Mic” at Freedom House, “New Alabama Poetry” with local poets TJ Beitelman, Kwoya Fagin Maples, Emma Bolden and Jessica Smith, and the BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez screening at Homewood Public Library.
We also hope you continue to support us in the future. We are committed to expanding the opportunities for Birmingham poets and lovers of poetry to commune, and we will continue to strive to bring you quality events such as this “Evening with Sonia Sanchez.” We hope you continue to place your trust in us to fulfill our mission.
