Poetry makes local magic.
We are so excited about the 2019 Magic City Poetry Festival! Last year, I was absolutely blown away by the community engagement and support for our week of literary and cultural programming. This year, we are so thrilled to expand the celebration of poetry and community to the entire month of April! Thanks to the generous sponsorship of PEN America, UAB, Jefferson State Community College, the Awesome Foundation, the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the AWC, and the support of many community organizations like the Birmingham Public Library, Alabama School of Fine Arts, Birmingham Museum of Art, Cahaba River Society, Art Town, DISCO, and many more, we’re bringing poetry to you in ways you might not have imagined!
From April 4-27, we’ll be reaching the Greater Birmingham area with programs for all ages—even for those who don’t think they like poetry!
We’ll commemorate the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we’ll dance the night away at a Poetry Block Party, we’ll toast to National Poetry month with some poetry-themed cocktails, we’ll hear poetry read in languages other than English, we’ll showcase our youth and the powerful work they write, and we’ll get to hear from one of Birmingham’s most internationally influential daughters, Sonia Sanchez. It’s going to be such a beautiful month to connect and create community, all while reading, writing, and listening to poetry. Make sure to check our calendar for full event details and dates, and keep up with us on social media or say hi in person when you come to one of our 2019 events! As my favorite poet Lucille Clifton said, “won’t you celebrate with me?”
