The Chief Donald Lewis Jones Memorial Scholarship was created in 2021, weeks after the sudden death of Fire Chief Donald L. Jones, who served the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Department as Assistant Fire Chief and, during his final year in his life, served as The City of Midfield's first Black Fire Chief.

Chief Jones was very committed to education throughout his life, and he was steadfast in his belief that everyone should be able to access knowledge. He made sure all of his children made it through college debt-free through the sweat and work of his own hands.

The Jones Family decided to create the scholarship to honor his memory and dedication to service and to recognize students who exhibited one of his defining characteristics, perseverance through hardships. Within a few days’ time, the scholarship was completely community funded with enough resources to fund an annual gift for a graduating senior for the next ten years. The spirit of community service and generosity is present through this scholarship in who it memorializes and who supported it.

By using the link below, we ask you to submit a candidate among your graduating class who you feel has personified perseverance over hardships--either this year in particular or throughout their school career. We will take all of the submissions into consideration and award a student $500. This scholarship is without stipulations, meaning, the student and their family can use the money in whatever way they feel will best support the student's college journey.
